Christine Hvidt installs listening sculptures for the project Subterranean in Boskoop at the new park Tuinen van Boskoop (‘Gardens of Boskoop’), and at the regenerative tree nursery Het Groene Huis (‘The Green House’). The sculptures, constructed from discarded tree stumps, make the sounds of the living soil audible. The artist guides the audience on this sonic exploration of the life beneath our feet.
About the project
Subterranean is an interdisciplinary art–science project combining sound art, machine learning, and ecoacoustic exploration of life in the sonic underworld below ground.
Amplifying to the voices and sonic behaviour of soil-living creatures, Subterranean experiments with ways of relating to the vibrant soil environments anchored in specialised machine learning algorithm analysis, shared data, and sound composition, from an embodied, scientific, and open-ended perspective.
Situated in the cultural context of Boskoop — a historically important tree nursery area in the Green Heart region of the Netherlands— Subterranean delves into the local soils of Tuinen van Boskoop (Gardens of Boskoop) and Het Groene Huis (The Green House) alongside local communities and scientists.
Subterranean invites various ways of becoming familiar with and listening to/with the underground network of life through bioacoustic monitoring, live responsive sound sculptures, a website sharing digital artworks and open-source data, guided ecocentric attunement sessions, and dialogue gatherings with scientists and special guests.
