Participatory art project and media installation

The Digital Tree Monument is an art project by Nicole Spit, in which characteristic trees are digitised and placed in a virtual dream world.

She does this using special software for digital scanning and image editing.

Trees mean a great deal to life in the city, to us humans, and also to other living beings and organisms. They provide healthier air, richer biodiversity, and a pleasant atmosphere. They can witness important events and enrich our lives with meaningful experiences, feelings, thoughts, and memories.

Unfortunately, trees can disappear due to mortality or felling. Sadly, we cannot restore trees like stone monuments.

How could we preserve our important, old, characteristic, and monumental trees? Could we perhaps preserve trees by digitally capturing them in Virtual Reality? What would it mean, and how would it feel?

In her project, Nicole explores the existence of trees as meaningful living beings that are not only part of the living environment but also of our society. A tree deserves to be celebrated as a meaningful life and to be commemorated when it is lost.

Terrestris, platform for eco-regenerative culture, and artist Nicole Spit invite residents of Gouda to participate in the Digital Tree Monument project, which is being realised and exhibited as part of the Green Heart Biennale 2026.

Workshop

Join Nicole’s workshop on Saturday May 9 and learn how the digital scanning software and method work. You can try it out yourself and participate creatively in making the monument of the chosen tree, and then also create your own sculptural print of a characteristic part of the tree.

The final result – the art installation – will become part of the festival exhibition at GOUDasfalt between May 30 and June 21, 2026.
