Subterranean is an interdisciplinary art–science project combining sound art, machine learning, and ecoacoustic exploration of life in the sonic underworld below ground.

Amplifying to the voices and sonic behaviour of soil-living creatures, Subterranean experiments with ways of relating to the vibrant soil environments anchored in specialised machine learning algorithm analysis, shared data and sound composition from an embodied, scientific, and open-ended perspective.

Situated in the cultural context of Boskoop — a historically important tree nursery area in the Green Heart region of the Netherlands— Subterranean delve into the local soils of Tuinen van Boskoop (Gardens of Boskoop) and Het Groene Huis (The Green House) alongside local communities and scientists.

Subterranean invites various ways of becoming familiar with and listening to/with the underground network of life through bioacoustic monitoring, live responsive sound sculptures, a website sharing digital artworks and open-source data, guided ecocentric attunement sessions, and dialogue gatherings with scientists and special guests.
